Need New Binoculars? Look No Further!
We decided at the last minute to go camping, despite the warnings from the authorities about fire hazards. What made our trip a little safer was that we had just retired our old large bulky pair of 1960?s Bushnell binoculars in favour of a new pair, the ?Nikon Action 7x35?. The reason for the purchase was for us to be able to monitor the hills, ridges and valleys for smoke activity. This mainly for our own camping safety and not having to turn around in a hurry or having a rude smoky awakening surrounded by fire in the middle of the night.
What made the Nikon Action 7x35 binoculars our choice was the high-resolution blur-free image that allowed for the signs of smoke that can easily be mistaken as mist and morning fog. The Nikon has an easy ?Diopter Control? left eye/right eye balancing function. It also has lens coatings that deliver optimum brightness and flare free viewing of the true wide-field 400 feet at 1000 yards. We found them light (25 oz) and tough with the polycarbonate chassis with a rubber grip. You can even mount them on a tripod and use them as a telescope.
On the last day, we thought that the peaks in the distance were unusually blue and distant. Sure enough, when we focused in on them, we found that the normally stagnant mist was actually smoke wafting in and out between outcroppings of cliffs. Later that night we heard of a new fire in that area that had been started by campers! The price is right; it?s lightweight and magnifies 7x! In short, with this choice of binoculars, you simply can?t go wrong, believe me. And you?ll discover a new safer brighter world! Check them out.

Ottolenghi Soba Noodles with Aubergine and Mango
Sunday afternoons are best when they're lazy. There are different varieties of lazy Sundays, of course, but I have two favorites in particular. There's the lounge around the house, don't bother brushing your hair kind. And there's the loll around in the sunshine, preferably on a beach or lawn, variety. I got together with my family for the latter last week - seven of us, polliwogs and picnic tables, donkeys and dahlias, fish ponds, and even a turtle or two. Lunch?...
I stumbled on California-grown mangoes a few days prior. Fragrant, not-at-all fibrous, sweet Keitt mangoes. A rare sight. I snatched one up immediately and it was my intention to finally make Yotam Ottolenghi's Soba Noodles with Aubergine and Mango from Plenty, I've had it bookmarked forever. But, it being a lazy Sunday and all...I'm just going to say it. I overslept. We ended up picking up deli sandwiches on the way out of town instead. The good news is I had all the ingredients prepped for the soba noodles when we arrived back home. So these herb-showered, spicy brown-sugar and lime sauced noodles went on the menu for dinner.
A bit of a heads up - there's a good amount of preparation involved in this recipe. The upside is that you can do much of it ahead of time if you like. And you can easily double or triple the recipe for meals throughout the week. I'll call out anything you can do ahead of time in the head notes down below, and suggest a couple substitutions for any mango-deprived cooks out there.
Those of you heading to Rome - I know there were a number of you. I haven't forgotten. I'm almost done writing up my favorite spots. I'll hopefully post the list sometime in the next few days.

Duffy the Disney Bear - New face to see (and buy) at Disney Parks

If you are planning at trip to Disneyland Resort or Walt Disney World at the holidays, you will likely encounter Duffy the Disney Bear.And when you do, I imagine you will likely think, "Hey, who the heck is this?"
No, you've never seen Duffy in a Disney movie. He's never been in a Mickey Mouse cartoon or a Pixar animated short. And he's not the star of a new series for preschoolers on the Disney Channel.
Duffy the Disney Bear is the first character conceived and introduced solely in Disney Parks. That's right - Disney made him so that they could sell you another souvenir.
Duffy's "backstory" is that he was sewn by Minnie Mouse as a present for Mickey, to accompany him on his travels around the world. We here at Gadling told you this summer how many grown men take teddy bears on business trips, I suppose grown mice need a stuffed animal to cuddle on their business trips, too.
Duffy was introduced as a costumed character at Epcot and Disney's California Adventure this fall after six years of popularity at Tokyo Disneyland Resort. In Tokyo, Duffy is such a craze that young women line up outside Disney stores when a new Duffy outfit is released.
And just in time for Black Friday shopping, he is being sold in three sizes at Disney's Florida and California theme parks, along with a variety of outfits, Duffy keychains and other souvenirs. The Orlando Sentinel reports that about three dozen Duffy items are expected to arrive in the coming year.
In addition to his souvenirs, Duffy has a shiny new Facebook page with more than 5,000 fans.

The Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade Balloon Inflation

The Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade always attracts a crowd from the Upper West Side of Manhattan down to W. 34th Street, where you'll find the store for which the parade is named. It can be exciting to cram onto the streets and see each of the floats and balloons roll by. Even if it is chilly outside, with the coffee in your hands quickly growing cold, this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and experiencing it in person does not compare to having it on television in the background when you're preparing Thanksgiving dinner.
If you come to New York City for the parade, there's an attraction the night before that doesn't draw the same hype, yet I find to be much more fun: the balloon inflation. From 3 PM to 10 PM the night before Thanksgiving, crowds converge on the blocks that circle the American Museum of Natural History to watch the balloons slowly take shape. For many, this is an alternative to going to the parade, providing both the experience of seeing the balloons and the feel of an insider going behind the scenes. A unique touch for me is a Gadling family connection: Melanie Nayer's father was part of the crew inflating the balloons in years past.
