Save big bucks at after-Christmas sales

Sure, we're still pretty focused on getting through the holidays at this point, but if you still have the stomach for more shopping, the period just after the holidays is a great time to buy certain items -- some of which you might not expect to find at steep discounts. Here's a rundown of best bets.

Fifteen People Have Spoken: 2010?s Best Stuff ? Part One

I have stirred the proverbial pot a bit...

We can all check the web to find the Top 100 Travel Websites and the Best Music of 2010 and even the Best Breeds at the Westminster Dog Show. Granted, all fascinating stuff but why rehash it? It's out there - over and over. (Yes, I really do understand the rankings thing.) But, do you want to be "just a number" or would you prefer to be remembered as a real person who had a real opinion too? Our contributors to this Round-Up Discussion voted for the latter. Due to the length and number of replies, this is Part One.

Hackers equipped with inexpensive radio hardware and open source software can compromise your mobile phone, listen to your conversations, intercept your data, or rack up huge bills on premium services, all without you knowing. Ralf-Philipp Weinmann, a cryptologist at the University of Luxembourg Laboratory of Cryptology and Security, has discovered a new type of over-the-air attack on mobile phones, and at the 2010 DeepSec conference in Vienna demonstrated how the exploit could be used against nearly any mobile phone... Open Question: I want to camp around, not really in, Death Valley, is there a place I could do so without a tent?

I would like to drive out to the desert (either in or around Death Valley, CA) and camp there, with just the earth and my car (and my best friend) and spend two days there, completely, without having to leave for food or perhaps facilities?

Where is a good place to plan on driving too. Distances is not a problem, i already plan on driving from Ohio to Nevada or so.

Also, what is the terrain like? Is it all sand or is there grass?

Links to the place you are speaking of would be grand. But if you could at least tell me a park, camping site or city, that'd be great.

I'm looking for a place that I could sleep in the beauty of nature.

Random activities in a nice month

Symphony of Fire

It was another great year for fireworks. Canada did a wizard of Oz themed presentation that I thought was quite good. My favorite part was the rainbow - I really wished I had brought out my camera. Total presentation though, China was my personal favorite. In previous shows they have been smoky, and this year was no different, but they seemed able to make due.

Yew Lake

Ever have an extra hour free on the North Shore? We drove up to Cypress Mountain and walked up to Yew Lake. It's a nice little walk and it really is wheel chair accessible.

Yew Lake With FogWet HardhackHandfull Of Blueberries

Blue berries were out everywhere. It is quite surprising how much comerical blue berries are different from the wild variety. The wild berries are smaller and have way more seeds, but the flavors are much more intense. That said, I suspect you aren't supposed to pick berries in a provincial park.

Three Pictures of a Flower

My sister invited us to meet them half way for lunch on a sunny summer weekend. We picked Gary Point in Steveston as our place to meet.

Brown Eyed Susans Growing In Dry FieldAfter lunch the local tourist fleecing establishments (costly and not so great), we went for a short walk around the point. I've been to this point before and I'm always impressed by the fields of Brown Eyed Susans. These are local plants (although these may be garden escaped plants) built for this climate. The grass in the park is long since scortched, but these local plants are green and flowering. Impressed.

Close In On Brown Eyed SusanBrown Eyed Susans Undershot

Always on the lookout for new technique, I tried the "understand wideangle" shot. Turns out there is a trick - you really want to cover the sun with the flower otherwise the sky blows out to white. Good to know.

Need A New Camping Stove To Include In Your Outdoor Equipment Gear?

I remember, back in November, talking about all the ?soft deep fluffy snow blanketing our mountain trails?. Well, here it is, the 26th of January, and the local mountains are almost bare. I just got back from walking the dog and realized that the grass is very green, there are fat buds on the bushes and tulips are shooting up all over the place? AND? there is next to no snow on the mountains! This isn?t actually very good since we?re hosting the Winter Olympics in a couple of weeks; however, it is affording us an excellent opportunity to get in some early spring camping. So, here we go on our first outdoor camping trip of the year (and decade!). We?ve decided to take two weeks and do a little exploring on some of the local hills (away from the Olympic venues). We?re going to set up a base camp and do a few two-day outdoor hiking forays. Because we?re still recuperating from the indulgences of the Christmas holidays and are a little bit (ha, ha) out of shape, we are going to go as light as we can on the hiking camping gear. There are a few things I can skimp on but a good camping stove is not one of them. For a change we are going to try the EtaPower EF Trail Stove. This stove is the lightweight version of the original Eta Power EF stove. A net stuff sack and a lid have replaced the storage bag and frying pan. It weighs only 27 ounces and it?s about the same size as the Jetboil GCS but it is reported to boil water faster and be more fuel-efficient. They say that a 220-gram gas container (sold separately) will heat enough food for two people for at least 6 days, which will be just perfect for us. As well as the net stuff sack and lid, this EtaPower EF Trail Stove comes with a Piezo electric ignition, windscreen, burner stand, a 1.7-liter pot and handle. I am really looking forward to using this stove for the first time to make the first cup of hot chocolate on our first outdoor camping hiking adventure in the first year of this new decade. Let the games begin!

Injuries from the cold

The Adirondack Express Weekly had an article on cold related injuries where they state in the conclusion “The best treatment for cold injuries is to recognize the early warning signs and take action.” Hopefully, with care one avoids the prospect of injury.

The palm-sized Plug PC thin client computer from Chip PC

Chip PC's Plug PC offers a high performance thin-client or virtual desktop solution in a s...

Having full-blown computers linked to a central server delivering applications to office workers is so last century. More and more businesses are choosing to deploy thin-client or virtual desktop solutions, where much of the storage and processing needs are met at the data center. Advantages often include low power draw at the user end, low maintenance, and minimal desktop footprint. Chip PC's Plug PC cross-platform thin client or virtual desktop computer solution offers maximum load power consumption of just 3W, is about the same size as a pack of cards, and benefits from a processor architecture that provides the equivalent of 1.8GHz x86 processing power...
